Volunteering

Co-ordinators (Duty Officers) Needed

Do you have an hour or two spread over a week to suit you, to help us organise transport to essential medical appointments for those who have no transport of their own and cannot afford, for example, a taxi fare of over £100 to get to and from QA Hospital for their appointment?

What is involved?

Our Co-ordinators take calls from our 01730 892572 telephone number which are directed to their home telephone or mobile phone. They then find one of our volunteer drivers to take people to their appointment, wait for them and then bring them home again. On an average week our Co-ordinators organise about 11 or 12 trips.

A messaging service is essential because we do not expect our Co-ordinators to be tied to the telephone all day. They may have to take children to and from school, do shopping, attend a regular leisure activity or just pop next door for a cup of tea and chat.

No special skills are required. Full training is provided and new recruits can shadow one of the existing team to ease them into the role.

Drivers Needed

Do you enjoy driving? Do you enjoy meeting new people? If so, do you have any time in the week when you could help us to provide transport for people trying to get to medical appointments and who don't have access to their own transport or the wherewithall to afford, for example, £100+ to get to and from QA?

Our drivers may offer their services on set days of the week, between certain times or on an unlimited basis. Whatever is offered all drivers only agree to do journeys that they wish to do. No-one is ever under any pressure to agree to a request for help. We all understand that commitments to friends, family, activities and the like must take priority.

Drivers are contacted by phone - and occasionally email - by the co-ordinator on duty. They submit a mileage claim to our Treasurer every two months and are reimbursed at a rate of 45p per mile, which covers the mileage incurred from home and back again.
