Medical transport
To organise a driver for your appointment please call our Co-ordinator on 01730 892572 and preferably between 9:00am and 5:00pm, Mondays to Fridays.
We ask that people contact us as soon as they receive their appointments, but not more than three weeks beforehand, as early notifications make it easier to find a driver.
We provide a door to door service, with volunteers using their private cars, for those without access to transport of their own to help them attend their essential medical appointments. We do several hundred trips every year to a variety of medical locations.
The only restriction we have is that we can only take people who are able to get in and out of a car unaided. If unable to do this, the GP will organise transport to get people to and from their hospital appointments.
Provided we are told well in advance of an appointment we can usually take lightweight and folding wheelchairs in the boot of a volunteer's car. However not all of our drivers are willing to do this, and not all have had suitable Manual Handling training for lifting heavy weights.
Alternatively our volunteers can find a wheelchair at the hospital, but we need to know in advance, so that additional time can be factored into the trip to ensure that people do not arrive late for their appointment if a wheelchair is not readily available at the hospital.
BLUE BADGE: If a person has a blue badge we would ask that they hand this to the volunteer driver to assist with parking.
We ask people we transport to make a voluntary contribution towards the running costs of our drivers' cars. An envelope will be available in the car for this.
